McDowell County Schools provide special education and related services to all children with disabilities from age three through twenty-one inclusive.
When children are found eligible for special services, an Individualized Education Plan is developed stating the services to be provided. A specialized staff implements the education plans.
Services available for students with disabilities include: Mentally Disabled, Orthopedically Impaired, Learning Disabled, Hearing Impaired, Other Health Impaired, Speech Impaired, Deaf, Visually Impaired, Blind, Emotionally Disabled, Autistic, Traumatic Brain Injury, Developmentally Delayed, and Speech and/or Language Impaired. Available related services include but are not limited to: Speech and/or Language, Counseling, Physical Therapy, Adaptive Physical Education, Transportation, and Occupational Therapy.
Announcements  Tima Williams is chosen as CEC Teacher of Excellence!McDowell County Schools is proud to recognize Tima Williams as our Exceptional Children Teacher of Excellence. Ms. Williams has been teaching since 1996, spending twelve years serving children in the exceptional children’s program in resource and inclusion settings at the junior high and elementary level. Holding a certification in Learning Disabilities K-12, and Academically and Intellectually Gifted, she is highly qualified for grades K-12 for all subjects and special needs. Ms. William’s professionalism, dedication to quality instruction, knowledge of student needs, and the ability to effectively communicate with children, peers and parents are keys to her success as a teacher. Ms. Williams will represent our county at the North Carolina Councel for Exceptional Children conference held in Greensboro in early November. Congratulations Ms. Williams!  Dr. Chuck Aldridge Honored at the State LevelThe North Carolina Council of Administrators of Special Education has awarded Dr. Chuck Aldridge with the Matthew Joel Hastings Outstanding Administrator of Special Education of the year for the Western Region of NC! We are all very proud of Dr. Aldridge for this achievement. All of the Exceptional Children Staff of McDowell County would like to congratulate him. We are very honored to have the opportunity to work with such a visionary that always keeps what is best for the children in the forefront of each day. Congratulations Dr. Aldridge!
